Pegasus

1. What is Pegasus?

Pegasus is a powerful spyware developed by the Israeli company NSO Group. It can secretly infect smartphones (both Android and iOS) and access:

Messages
Emails
Call logs
Microphone and camera
Location data
Encrypted apps like WhatsApp, Signal, etc.

Governments have used Pegasus for surveillance, claiming it helps track terrorists and criminals. However, it has also been allegedly used to spy on journalists, activists, politicians, and judges, raising serious privacy and human rights concerns.

2. How does it work?

It infects phones through vulnerabilities in mobile operating systems, often without requiring the user to click on any link (called zero-click exploits).

Short Summary of the news

The Supreme Court heard petitions on the alleged use of Pegasus spyware for surveillance in India. Petitioners, including journalists and advocates, sought disclosure of a technical committee report that examined infected phones. While the court acknowledged individuals' right to know if their phones were hacked, it refused to release full details due to national security concerns. It agreed to reveal only whether specific individuals were affected. A related report on surveillance reforms remains sealed. The case will be heard again on July 30.
