EDITORIAL: Eradicating Manual Scavenging: The Role of Sewage Cleaning Robots in Tamil Nadu.

Manual scavenging, a hazardous practice that has claimed numerous lives, continues to persist in parts of India despite strict legal prohibitions. Tamil Nadu, which has recorded 253 deaths related to manual scavenging between 1993 and 2024, remains at the forefront of this crisis. However, the state is also making significant strides in adopting sewage cleaning robots to eliminate the need for human intervention in hazardous environments. While this technological shift is commendable, challenges persist in expanding its reach across all municipalities.

The Role of Sewage Cleaning Robots
Sewage cleaning robots are designed to replace manual labor with automation, ensuring safety, efficiency, and environmental sustainability. These robots function through:

1. Navigation & Monitoring: Equipped with cameras and sensors, they assess sewer blockages and transmit real-time data.

Robots like Bandicoot, developed by Genrobotics, and HomoSEP, designed by IIT Madras, have emerged as India’s primary solutions to replacing manual scavenging.

Nagapattinam: The municipality introduced the Bandicoot robot to eliminate manual cleaning.
Tuticorin: The corporation implemented the Bandicoot robot to eradicate manual scavenging.
Coimbatore: IIT Madras' HomoSEP robot was introduced to clean septic tanks.


Despite these developments, Tamil Nadu still relies on manual scavenging in many municipalities due to limited infrastructure, high costs, and lack of awareness.

Engineers play a crucial role in designing, developing, and deploying sewage cleaning robots. Their contributions include:

Engineers specializing in robotics, AI, and IoT are developing more efficient, cost-effective, and durable robots for sewage cleaning.
IIT Madras’ engineers created the HomoSEP robot, specifically designed to clean septic tanks without human intervention.

2. Infrastructure Development

Civil and environmental engineers integrate robotic cleaning systems into urban sanitation networks, ensuring smoother operation and maintenance.
