📅 Day 7 – Irregular Verbs: ir, tener, ser

These verbs are must-know. You’ll use them all the time


🧭 PART 1: Verb “ir” (to go)

🛤️ Usage:
To talk about where you’re going.
Use “ir + a + place” → I go to the park = Voy al parque.

📌 Examples:

  • ¿Adónde vas? → Where are you going?

  • Yo voy a casa → I’m going home

  • Vamos a la escuela → We’re going to school

🧠 Trick: Think of “voy” like “I voyage” = I go.


🎒 PART 2: Verb “tener” (to have)

🎯 Usage:

  • To express possession → Tengo un libro (I have a book)

  • To express age → Tengo 20 años (I’m 20 years old)

  • To express certain conditions → Tengo hambre (I’m hungry)

🧠 Common Expressions with tener:

  • tener frío → to be cold

  • tener calor → to be hot

  • tener hambre → to be hungry

  • tener sueño → to be sleepy

  • tener prisa → to be in a hurry

  • tener razón → to be right

  • tener miedo → to be afraid

📌 Examples:

  • Tengo un hermano → I have a brother

  • ¿Tienes tiempo? → Do you have time?

  • No tienen razón → They’re not right

❗ Why is “ser” important?

Spanish has two verbs for “to be”:

  1. ser → for permanent things

  2. estar → for temporary things (we’ll do this tomorrow!)


✅ When to use ser:

Use the acronym DOCTOR for "ser":

📌 Examples:

  • Yo soy estudiante → I am a student

  • ¿Eres tú colombiano? → Are you Colombian?

  • Hoy es lunes → Today is Monday

  • Nosotros somos amigos → We’re friends

🧠 Tip to remember: “Ser” = stuff that sticks (personality, job, name, time)


🎯 PART 4: Practice Sentences

Translate to Spanish:

  1. I am a teacher.

  2. She is my friend.

  3. We are tired and hungry.

  4. I go to the gym.

  5. They have two dogs.

  6. Are you (informal) Colombian?


Answers:

  1. Yo soy profesor(a).

  2. Ella es mi amiga.

  3. Estamos cansados y tenemos hambre. (We'll learn “estar” tomorrow – sneak peek!)

  4. Yo voy al gimnasio.

  5. Ellos tienen dos perros.

  6. ¿Eres colombiano?
