DAY-9 OF SPANISH CHALLENGE
📅 Day 9 – Daily Routines, Reflexive Verbs, and Present Progressive
We’ll learn how to describe what you are doing now and how reflexive verbs work for actions you do to yourself (like washing your face, brushing your teeth, etc.).
🧠 PART 1: Reflexive Verbs (Los Verbos Reflexivos)
What are reflexive verbs?
These are verbs that indicate the subject does something to itself. You’ll recognize them by the -se at the end of the infinitive form.
Examples:
-
lavarse (to wash oneself)
-
despertarse (to wake up)
-
vestirse (to get dressed)
-
cepillarse (to brush oneself)
How to conjugate reflexive verbs?
-
First, remove the -se from the infinitive (e.g., lavarse → lavar).
-
Then, conjugate the verb normally based on the subject.
-
Add the reflexive pronoun before the verb.
Reflexive Pronouns:
Subject | Pronoun |
---|---|
yo | me |
tú | te |
él/ella | se |
nosotros | nos |
vosotros | os |
ellos | se |
Examples of Reflexive Verbs in Sentences:
-
Yo me levanto a las 7 am. → I wake up at 7 am.
-
Tú te duchas por la mañana. → You shower in the morning.
-
Ella se maquilla antes de salir. → She puts on makeup before going out.
-
Nosotros nos acostamos temprano. → We go to bed early.
🎯 PART 2: Present Progressive (El Presente Progresivo)
Use present progressive to say what you are doing right now. It’s like saying "I am doing" in English.
Formula:
estar (conjugated) + verb ending in -ando or -iendo
Examples:
-
Estoy hablando (I am talking)
-
Estás comiendo (You are eating)
-
Ella está estudiando (She is studying)
-
Nosotros estamos trabajando (We are working)
-
Ellos están bailando (They are dancing)
Key Points:
-
The verb “estar” must be conjugated correctly (just like we learned before).
-
The verb in the -ando/-iendo form is the main action you’re doing right now.
Note: You can also use ir + a + infinitive to talk about something that is going to happen soon (near future).
Example:
-
Voy a estudiar más tarde. → I am going to study later.
🧩 PART 3: Practice
Translate to Spanish:
-
I wake up at 6 am.
-
You (informal) are studying right now.
-
We brush our teeth every morning.
-
They are reading a book.
-
He is getting dressed.
✅ Answers:
-
Yo me despierto a las 6 am.
-
Tú estás estudiando ahora.
-
Nosotros nos cepillamos los dientes todas las mañanas.
-
Ellos están leyendo un libro.
-
Él está vistiéndose. (reflexive)
🎯 BONUS TIP: Combining Reflexive Verbs with Present Progressive
You can combine reflexive verbs with the present progressive to describe ongoing actions done to yourself:
Example:
-
Estoy cepillándome los dientes. → I am brushing my teeth.
-
Ella está poniéndose la ropa. → She is putting on clothes.
